Shower with a Friend!
That 70s advice is still true: “Save water – shower with a friend!” You’ll save energy, greenhouse gases and money too. Limiting showers to 5 minutes can save around $500 a year for a family of four!
Keep it Cold Inside!
For every minute your fridge door is open, it needs 3 energy intensive minutes to cool back down, and your freezer needs 30 minutes!
Drive the Limit
Want to save money and reduce your contribution to climate change? Drive the limit! If you usually drive 120 km/h on the 401, reducing your speed to 100 km/h reduces your fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by about 20%.
Get Recharged!
There’s bound to be another power outage this winter. Be ready! Get rechargeable batteries for your flashlights rather than disposable ones and eliminate waste. It costs more upfront but saves money in the long run. Throw away batteries also contain poisonous mercury. Keep it out of our dump by taking them to a Home Hardware store where they will be sent out for proper disposal.
Green De-icing
SALT – It’s not good for you or your grass and garden. De-ice your walkway and driveway with non-clumping, clay kitty litter. Flush the solids first and used litter works just as well on your driveway and even saves space at our dump. Woodstove ash works great too.
Green Christmas
Add ribbons and bows to a re-useable Tweed shopping bag and it makes a great “wrap” for Christmas presents! It will promote your community, encourage others to “bag a better environment” instead of using more plastic and it’s even Green!! Get yours from local Tweed Chamber of Commerce merchants.
